When military couple Alisa and Shawn Johnson struggled to find care for their Australian Shepherd, JD, during their service commitments, they recognized a challenge facing countless military families and founded Dogs on Deployment in 2011. As the organization?s first American Hero Pet of the Year and original mascot, JD helped bring national attention to a mission that would grow into a nationwide network of volunteers supporting military families and their pets. Though JD has since passed, his legacy lives on through the organization he inspired.

We?re bringing Dogs on Deployment?s past mascot shirts back from the archives as we prepare to search for the 2027 American Hero Pet of the Year and Dogs on Deployment?s 15th Mascot.
Each mascot represents a chapter in Dogs on Deployment?s history and the military families and pets at the heart of our mission. This limited collection gives our community a chance to revisit those stories, celebrate the mascots who represented us through the years, and support the work that continues today.
Past mascot designs will return to the archives when the 2027 American Hero Pet of the Year is announced on January 1st, 2027.
